Grids symbolize order and stability. In the mid-sixties, Hungarian artist Vera Molnar inserted some code into the algorithms controlling her computerized plotter, which brought gradual random disruption to the lines and squares that characterized her pioneering generative art. It inspired me to develop a hand-stitched square motif, used here in units on a damaged grid. Out of Order #3 is from a series that interprets the impact of the rapid social, political, financial, and technological change currently unravelling some of the rules-based order that has guided the functioning of international political, social, and trading networks since the 1950s.
