The terrible beauty of the 2024 eruption in Grindavík, Iceland, inspired me and added to my fascination with people residing in such a geologically active area. Geothermal energy generates their electricity, and hot water from geothermal sources is piped into homes and businesses. Living with active lava flow is normalized for citizens using preparedness and monitoring. Everyone knows what to do in the event of an eruption. I assume that a public works job description may include “construct berms to direct the flow of lava as needed.” The earth spews out its molten interior and, amazingly, life in Iceland goes on.
