Soft Coral Atoll #1 is inspired by the diversity of soft coral species
inhabiting all the world's oceans. Forming structures similar to stony corals,
they provide habitats for organisms and protect shores from waves.
This work is made from repurposed and upcycled fabric, batting and black primed canvas. Textiles were selected to create the coral forms to draw
attention to the alarming statistic that synthetic fiber laundering accounts for 35% of ocean microplastic pollution. The ingestion of these plastics by
corals reduces growth, reproduction, damages tissue and increases
susceptibility to disease and bleaching.
