Sitting in a jazz club one night, I took out my iPad and started painting. This piece came to focus and fruition during the fire-filled summer of 2018, reflecting my own experiences watching the wildfires in New Mexico and seeing their destruction and aftermath. My brother, the director of safety and security, was in the bunker at Los Alamos National Lab when the Cerro Grande Fire went over the lab, so this piece also has a personal story attached to the image. Even controlled burns, necessary for forest management, can get out of control as this one did in 2000.
