Joan Dyer and the Power of the Unconscious

Spirit Trees

Spirit Trees

Recently, Joan Dyer spoke to Clairan Ferrono about her piece for the SAQA auction:

Dyer: The inspiration for my auction piece, Spirit Trees, was a scrap of one of my hand-dyed fabrics, which runs up the center of the piece.  I added discharged black fabric and hand-dyed brown, with skinny yellow lines inserted between the pieces.  The quilting is in-the-ditch and free motion.  I chose the name because some of the dye patterns, when quilted, created an image of tree branches, which I duplicated in the outer sections.
