Cynthia St. Charles revealed her methods and inspiration for her auction donation piece to Clairan Ferrono:
St. Charles: My current work centers around the application of successive layers of hand painted and hand printed woven fabric, accentuated with machine quilting. Goldfinch incorporates screen printing adapted from my grandmother’s handwritten recipes.
Layers of hand painted broadcloth, hand printed with my hand carved block prints are overprinted with an additional layer of recipe screen prints. The surface imagery of spring blooming plants and the bird are adapted from my own photographs. My work is an expression of my personal relationship with the landscape of my native Montana.
