The Judy Chicago Art Education Award, funded by MaryRoss Taylor, is a $2,500 prize that honors Judy Chicago and her pioneering work as an art educator. The award is open to scholars, artists, and educators creating projects based on research that incorporates any of the archives that are included in the Judy Chicago Research Portal, which was launched in October 2019. These archives include: Judy Chicago’s Visual Archive at the Bettye Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA); Judy Chicago’s paper archives at the Schlesinger Library for the History of Women in America at Harvard; and Judy Chicago’s Art Education Collection at the Special Collections Library at Penn State which includes the K-12 Dinner Party Curriculum. Winners are awarded a certificate and a $2,500 prize, presented at an award ceremony to be held in July, 2021, at the Through the Flower Art Space in Belen, New Mexico.
In the spirit of Judy Chicago’s collaborative and participatory approach to making and teaching art, the institutions — which include a public university library, a private university library, and a national museum — have joined together in a rare collaboration to link their collections in efforts to providing scholars with a robust and accessible research experience. The Judy Chicago Research Portal highlights the impact of Chicago’s work and feminist practice via art and art education for which she is celebrated and seen as a forerunner of. The Judy Chicago Art Education Award celebrates this collaboration and encourages engagement with the collections as living archives that build upon continued scholarship and teaching to preserve feminist histories and feminist pedagogy.

Eligibility: International
- Is this only open to art educators?
No! While we encourage art educators to apply, we accept applications from anyone proposing a project that is based in research using any of the archives in the Judy Chicago Research Portal. This could include a series of artworks, collaborative performances, and more.
- Can I apply with a group/collective/etc., or is this open to individuals only?
Absolutely! We accept applications from individuals and from groups, just indicate that this is how you are in applying in the application form.
- Is this award to promote past projects or to fund future projects?
This award is to fund future projects. However, if you are currently working on a project that uses research done on the archives from the Judy Chicago Research Portal, these are eligible.
- When will I be notified of my application status?
We will notify all applicants sometime in mid-June.
