About the Instructor
Hollis Chatelain is an internationally recognized and award-winning artist specialized in textile painting. Through her work that addresses challenging social and environmental themes, Hollis reflects 12 years of experience living in West Africa and working with humanitarian organizations.
Using a distinctive style characterized by a dream-like use of color and imagery, her dye-painted scenes of multi-cultural life convey the untold stories of women, children, families, and the earth, and have been described as "easy to gaze at, but hard to forget."
With an educational background in design and photography, and over 35 years experience as a professional artist, Hollis' work can be found in public and private collections throughout the world. In addition to creating her art, Hollis holds lectures and workshops in the United States and abroad, instructing students in subjects including color, drawing, design, dye-painting, and quilting technique.
Workshop: "Painting Images with Dyes"
This workshop is designed to teach students how to paint with Procion dyes on cotton. Learning to control the dyes will be emphasized. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding, while using no resists.
All of these techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a scarf. Each student is asked to bring two or three 18"x 20" designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can be as simple as drawings from a coloring book because we will mainly be concentrating on how to apply the dyes. Students will leave with a painted piece that could be worked into a vest, quilt or pillow top.
Students are asked to bring:
- Two or three 18" x 20" drawings or designs (there will also be drawings on hand to choose from)
- White synthetic round brushes used normally for acrylic / watercolor painting - U.S. sizes 0, 2, 4, 8, 12 (I will have enough brushes available for sale for all the students who prefer to buy them directly from me. The brushes I sell are specific to the type of work I will be teaching).
- 4 large white plastic trash bags to put over and under your dyed pieces (please don't bring scented or textured trash bags!)
- Sharpie black magic marker (medium one)
- 2 - 3 light Prismacolor pencils (ex: light blue, light peach, light green, etc. - no yellow). Any type of Prismacolor pencils except Verithin or Water Color
- scotch tape
- 6 plastic teaspoons
- notebook and pencil for note taking
- 1 large zip lock bag (1 - 2 gallons)
- extra sheets of drawing paper
- rubber gloves (ex: kitchen rubber gloves)
- an empty film vial with top
- paper towels
- $40 supply fee for each student, payable to Hollis during class.
Sunday, November 17
Workshop participants arrive at 5:30 or later.
6:00 dinner. Included for workshop participants. Others may purchase.
7:00 Lecture from Hollis Chatelain
Monday, November 18
Tuesday, November 19

Date: November 17th at 7 PM
Cost: Free to all Florida SAQA members. Guests may attend at a cost of $15 cash at the door.
An Artist’s Journey
The journey of an artist is full of twists and turns. Techniques and styles change through inspiration, influence, and experience. Hollis will be speaking about this process, showing images portraying the evolution of various well known artists, and explaining how and why their art has changed and evolved over the years.
How to sign up
There will be two separate sign-up schedules for this event. The first will be for the workshop and the second will be for the retreat.
There will be 20 spots for the workshop, so you’ll want to be ready to sign up as soon as registration opens on Monday, August 5th (email will be sent that morning with a registration link).
Retreat registration will open on August 19th, at 10 AM. There will be 40 spots open for the retreat, so everyone who wants to attend should be able to.
