Thirty years ago, a group of artists met at a gallery in Atlanta to discuss the formation of an organization dedicated to celebrating a new type of quilt: the “art quilt.” Art quilts transformed the traditional functionality of quilts. They are meant to be exhibited as innovative and experimental works of art.
Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) began in 1989 with 50 individuals. Today, SAQA includes more than 3,400 members who promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications. The exhibition of these 30 small pieces made by SAQA members celebrates an important marker of the organization’s history.
