The teacher: Betty Busby
In a recent Facebook poll, Betty Busby was your first choice as a teacher, and it was a very good selection. She is an excellent art quilter, whose work has been shown in many prestigious shows throughout the country. She’s also a highly sought after teacher.
Workshop Description - New Techniques with Paint
Betty says: I have developed several unique methods of producing surface design on fabric. New Techniques is a class devoted to exploring those methods- we’ll explore many different media, from fabric paint, and paint sticks, to ink pencils. One of the advantages of using paint is that it will work on everything- cotton, bamboo, and synthetics- experimentation is encouraged!
I use a wet on wet painting system- the material is thoroughly dampened before the undiluted paint is applied. Due to the increased open time, the pigment can be spread on the fabric, colors can be blended directly, and brush strokes disappear. In addition, if the painting is done over a textured surface, an echo design of that texture can appear on the painted fabric due to the drying properties of the paint.
Using the painted fabric as a base, spectacular results can be achieved by over stenciling with Shiva paint sticks.
We will also explore the use of custom made vinyl shapes for sun printing, and use these as a springboard for additional surface design.
To be held Monday evening, January 14th, at 7 PM at Dayspring Retreat Center, Pavilion A. It will be free to all Florida SAQA members. Guests may attend at a cost of $15 cash at the door.
Lecture: Expect the Unexpected
As a lifelong artist, I enjoy looking at the world through an interpretive eye. As a result, inspiration sometimes comes from the strangest places- the old, the broken, the cast aside.
Join me in a short journey following some of my works from the initial spark to completed piece.
There will be only 18 spots for the class, so you’ll want to be ready to sign up as soon as registration opens. Registration will open at 9 AM on Monday, August 13th.
