Wonderful textures: an introduction to Marseille embroidery This very refined European technique, used mostly in the XVII and XVIII centuries for garments, changes completely the texture of the fabric with quilting stitches, stuffing, French knots and openwork. No batting is used between the two layers of solid fabric, making it possible to create eyelets, cut-Hebedo stitch and pulled fabric work. Both background channels and designs are stuffed, giving the whole project an amazing texture. Marseille embroidery can be used in very traditional looking projects as well as in contemporary designs. This workshop is taught over a minimum of 9 or 12 hours. It can also be taught over a longer period and in that case students will be shown how to draw their own designs. Kit available.
Embellished trapunto Learn how to use embroidery and embellishments with quilting to enhance the beauty of your designs and the texture of your fabric. Then add trapunto to achieve a wonderfully delicate and fancy look. This technique also lets you incorporate very subtle colors to your designs. 6-hour workshop. Intermediate level (You need to know how to hand quilt). Kit available.

Fine hand quilting This is a class for you if you want to learn how to hand quilt or want to improve your stitches. Not only do I demonstrate how to quilt, but I also share a lot of information about the whole quilting process, from choosing fabrics to selecting marking tools, batting, hoops, basting process, etc. It is amazing how the right supplies will make quilting more enjoyable and successful. Six-hour workshop. All levels.

How to draw your own quilting designs If you are not content to just use quilting designs commercially available and want to create one that will complement your piecing or appliqué project perfectly, this is for you. Don’t let the word “draw” intimidate you: I will show you how you can easily create intricate looking designs. During this 6-hour workshop, following a series of exercises, you will create the design for a miniature whole cloth quilt. 6-hour workshop. All levels. Drawing only.
Fiber Fun This workshop, which is a perfect companion workshop to “Fabric Pages”, will allow you to play with several surface design techniques such as silk paper, using Tyvek™ film and fabric, making “rags” with threads. These different techniques, great for contemporary fiber work, art quilting, doll making or crafts, are easy, fun and will help develop your creativity. During a 6-hour workshop, you will learn the basics by making a sample of each technique and I will share samples and ideas of how they can be used. When the workshop is taught over a longer period (12 hours or more), other surface design elements, such as stamping, foiling, beading…will be added. All levels. Kit available. Sewing machine required.

Fabric pages As keeping a record of our lives and events important to us is becoming more difficult in our cyber world, we find ourselves drawn to creative activities such as scrap booking. If you are a fiber person, you can combine your love of fabrics and techniques such as embroidery, quilting, embellishing and surface design with creating a record of precious memories. In this workshop, you will learn to design a “fabric page”, incorporating writing and photo transfer, hand or/and machine embroidery, and beading, stamping, foiling… The workshop is normally taught over a two-day period (12 hours). When taught over a longer period, more techniques will be added. All levels. Kit available. Hand and machine work (sewing machine required).

Lectures
“My work is me”: this is a slide/trunk show of my studio work in which I use various surface design and 3-d techniques as well as traditional techniques in a contemporary format. I share not only the pieces but explain where the ideas came from, how the design evolved during the making process. Approx. 1 hour.
“Not just a quilting stitch”: Quilting designs are part of the basic concept of each one of my pieces. During this lecture, I share how quilting has become more and more important in my work and how it has evolved from plain grid designs to the use of traditional techniques such as embellished trapunto and Marseille embroidery in contemporary work. This is a slide/trunk show, approx. 1 hour.
