Workshops: The following workshops are available as one, two or three day classes, or several can be combined for a 5-day class.
Colorful Fabric Painting Want
to learn how to use paints on fabrics without making mud? While fun is
the goal for this class far more than control, we’ll start by learning
how to mix colors around the color wheel and then practice making some
tints, tones and shades. You’ll learn about analogous, monochromatic
and complimentary colors. Once you feel comfortable working with color
mixing, we’ll create blended washes of color and work with wet and dry
brush painting techniques. You’ll learn a variety of ways to create
patterning and textures such as sun prints and salt resists that will
be excellent for using in piecing or appliqué projects. Class fee for
paints and supplies.
Fanciful Fabric Patterning and Texturing Learn
how to design and make wonderful marks and patterns on fabric with
simple tools that you make yourself – we’ll use household items to make
a variety of stamps that create surprisingly sophisticated and unique
patterns on fabric. From carved, heat impress and scored foam blocks to
making blocks with sponges, string, rope, vegetables and
weatherstripping, you will never look at your local hardware store and
supermarket quite the same way again! Class fee for materials.
Surface Design Sampler
This
is a class that I teach twice annually, fall and spring, in my
Rochester studio, but it is also available as a five day class in other
locations. We meet every two weeks for a full day of exploration and
experimentation with a variety of surface design techniques that
include: generating ideas for stamp and silkscreen designs, making
thermofax screens, working with transfer dyes and paints, painting
fusible web, foiling, solvent transfers, stamp making and block
carving, monoprinting and making temporary silkscreens for
improvisational printing. Discharge on Silk and Cotton
Bring
hand-dyed or commercially dyed fabrics and get ready to make and use
wonderful tools for removing color with thickened thiox paste and steam
heat. During this class we’ll make and work with numerous tools for
applying the paste to cloth – from stamping and stenciling to stitched,
folded and clamped resists and pole wrapping. Find out what rich and
intricate patterned cloth you can create by REMOVING color. Class fee
for supplies. A well-ventilated large space is essential for this class
and all students will need to wear acid-cartridge masks.
Adding Texture to Your Quilts with Hand Stitching and Beading
Creating
multiple layers on fabric adds depth and interest. Even after you have
constructed and machine quilted a new piece, you can add excitement and
the element of surprise to your work with simple hand embroidery
stitches and beading. Learn about embroidery threads, beads and how to
combine them on a variety of fabric surfaces.
