Improvisational Scrap Quilt:
In
this class, Carol will teach some simple piecing techniques and really
free ways of creating patchwork designs. Learn to play with color and
design without anxiety, and use all of those leftover scraps you’ve
been saving. We’ll use strips, squares, wedgies, couching and fusing
--- just to name a few of the methods you’ll get to try. All are fast
and easy! You’ll go home with all of the components done to finish the
quilt, and ideas galore to make more quilts using these methods. Tired
of that precise cutting and those exacting patterns? Then this is the
class for you. It will free you up and make you more creative. Come
join us for the fun! Here is a photo of the sample quilt Carol made
using these methods.
Going in Circles Workshop
Have
you always admired those pieced circles? You can do it with ease and
without even pinning. Create a small (32 x 32) unique quilt of your
very own while learning to piece circles & some unusual strip sets,
and do Carol’s trademark circular quilting to complete the look.
We will start with piecing simple circles that you cut
improvisationally and move on to more complex circles. Then Carol will
show how to make and use some unusual strip sets to complete the quilt.
All done with a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allow
you to think out of the box. You’ll also learn how to finish your
quilts with facings instead of bindings.
You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in
many different color schemes (see the samples done in two different
colorways), and hang in your own home or give as a gift. Check Carol’s
website (www.caroltaylorquilts.com) to see how many quilts Carol has
made using these same techniques, and then come make your very own.
Sensuous Lines & Curves Workshop
Do you love the look of those really skinny lines and curves, but don’t
know how to make them? Now is your chance to learn. Carol shares the
secrets of piecing them, and you can make those practice blocks into a
lovely wall quilt (41 x 36) full of those “sensuous lines and curves”!
We will start with piecing simple lines that you cut improvisationally
on small pieces of fabric that will turn out to be 7 ½” blocks. The
middle section of “sensuous lines and curves” is made by couching and
becomes the centerpiece for the quilt. All of this is done with no
pinning and a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allow you
to think outside of the box. You’ll also learn how to finish your
quilts with facings instead of bindings.
You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in
any 4-5 basic colors you like. Check Carol’s website
(www.caroltaylorquilts.com) to see how many quilts Carol has made using
these same techniques in her Linear Series, and then come make your
very own version.
Arc-i-Textures:
Want
to create a small (15 x 15) unique quilt of your very own and learn
something about composition, textures, and circular quilting? Then this
is the class for you! This is a chance to use some of those fancy and
unusual fabrics that you’ve been attracted to, but didn’t know how to
use. We will tame them by fusing, and learn to mix them with other
textured looking fabrics. And you won’t need much of any one
fabric…even scraps will do.
You’ll learn a bit about composition and how to balance it with both
color and size. You’ll learn about fusing and how to finish your quilts
with facings as opposed to bindings. And Carol will also teach you how
to quilt and couch those “perfect” circles that have almost become a
trademark on her quilts. You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small
quilt, which you can do in many different color schemes, and hang in
your own home or give as a gift. Please check my website
(www.caroltaylorquilts.com) and look under the Gallery for
Arc-i-Textures to see the 41 “Arcs” I have made.
Free Motion Quilting Patterns:
If you have not had a chance to take Carol’s free motion stitching
class, do try to sign up as it continues to fill each time it is
offered. I guess everyone wants to be able to machine quilt and get
things done more quickly! Carol will teach 12-15 quilting design
patterns for you to try and go over many of the techniques in the
various books teaching free motion quilting. This is a hands-on class
to learn and practice these fast new ways of quilting and embellishing
your quilts by machine. Learn to do decorative stitching with those
metallic and rayon threads! Machines need only have a straight stitch
to do these designs. And even the students who’ve had very little
quilting experience have been successful using these methods. You’ll be
able to give your quilts a unique flavor, style, and sparkle in no time
using these methods – and get all of those unfinished tops quilted
quickly!
More Free Motion Quilting Patterns:
Here’s a brand-new class for those of you who have taken the basic Free
Motion Quilting class or already have basic free motion skills and want
to learn more patterns and enhance your free motion quilting skills.
Carol will introduce and pass out drawings for 65 (yep, sixty five!)
different quilting patterns not shown in the original Free Motion
Quilting class. She will show you how to use 32 different “meandering”
designs, 28 “filler” designs and 5 border designs. You will receive 16
pages of Carol’s drawings to take home and use as ideas on your own
quilts. So, come and try some of these new designs and improving your
free motion quilting abilities.
Threadpainting
Have you ever wanted to add more thread to create depth but not had one
of those expensive embroidery machines to do it? Then this is the class
for you. Carol teaches you to make thread covered pieces like the fish
or corals in her Coral Reef quilt by using a free motion zigzag stitch.
She will bring patterns and samples of 12 designs to try using this
free motion zigzag method. It’s easy and anyone who can lower their
feed dogs can do it. Every design uses only the zigzag stitch. It’s
like coloring with crayons, except you use threads, and you’ll learn to
make solid areas and to blend the colors to make realistic looking
pansies or fish. She’ll show you how to take these pieces and add them
to your quilts to make your quilts something very special and unique.
Spinning Stars:
Want to
learn both paper piecing and something more about color and value use?
You’ll learn both making this quilt. There is only ONE block to learn
to paper piece, but the color and value choices are what make it sing.
This quilt uses many different black and white graphic fabrics as a
background to brightly colored stars. The graphic effects in this quilt
are created by contrasting the stars against the black and white, and
by using value as a guide. Choosing the fabrics is part of the secret,
and we will spend time refining your choices to get the right effect.
If you’ve never paper pieced, it’s a good chance to learn to do that on
a medium sized quilt. If you have done a bit of paper piecing, this is
a great way to expand that knowledge. This makes a stunning 40 x 40
quilt with perfect points. You’ll be thrilled with the resulting quilt,
which you can do in many different color schemes, and it doesn’t even
require a border.
Flannel Ragquilt: Want a
cozy 49 x 63 flannel quilt to curl up with on your couch? Or a
delightfully soft crib quilt? A great gift? This one is perfect! So
easy, even a beginner can make it. Made only in flannels with FRINGED
edges, so no binding is needed. The top, batting, and backing for each
block are put together in 9” x 9” blocks and then combined in rows to
make the whole quilt. The quilting is done on the 9” blocks too BEFORE
you put it together. So, there is no struggle with quilting a bulky
quilt. FAST!! Simple. No ironing! Carol has made 27 (yep, twenty seven!
They’re addictive!) ragquilts, so she has the most efficient methods to
make this quilt down pat. Make one for your couch, a gift, or your
favorite child.
Lectures:
Sew Many Quilts, So Little Time: A retrospective of
Carol’s quilting career, showing how she produced over 450 quilts (many award
winning) since she began quilting in 1993.
Working in a Series: A description of how to create work
in a series, showing the process of how Carol made the 39 quilts in her Gong
Series, and then went on to her Confetti, Linear, and Arc-i-Texture Series.
