Art quilters from around the world gathered in Athens, Ohio this past weekend for the opening of Quilt National 2019, a biennial exhibition of contemporary quilts put on by The Dairy Barn Arts Center. It is the 40th year since the founding of this biennial.
The exhibition is on view from May 25 – September 2, 2019 at The Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio. From there, the exhibition is divided into smaller shows which travel for two years. You can learn more about the traveling versions of Quilt National 2019 here.
Francoise Barnes, Carolyn Ducey, and Judy Kirpich were this year’s jurors.
The exhibition features 84 contemporary art quilts made by artists from around the world. You can view a complete list of the exhibiting artists here.
The opening of the exhibition was on Friday, May 24 for artists, Dairy Barn Art Center members, and guests. The Dairy Barn was packed!
Sylvia Gegaregian from Portola Valley, California was the winner of the SAQA Award for her piece entitled “Curvaceous I”. All of the award winners are listed here along with photos of their quilts. Congratulations to all of the award winners!
SAQA artists and their work were well represented at the opening.
On Saturday, May 25th, there was a gallery walk with each artist present giving a short talk about their work.
After the gallery talks, the Dairy Barn was opened to the public and there was a book signing.
