SAQA Global Exhibition Hi-Lights
Guns: Loaded Conversations had a very successful debut at the San Jose Quilt & Textile Museum in San Jose, California.  You can learn more about the exhibition and the press it has received by reading this recent SAQA blog post. The exhibition in San Jose ends on July 15, 2018. Guns will then travel East and be displayed at the New England Quilt Museum  in Lowell, Massachusetts from January 9, 2019 through April 6, 2019.

SAQA Global Exhibition Season after Season  artists have been announced. The exhibition opens in January 2019 at the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, Texas. Congratulations to the selected artists!


The SAQA Global Exhibitions Turmoil & Tranquility  is now scheduled to be on display at the Grants Pass Museum of Art in Grants Pass, Oregon. The exhibit will run from June 1, 2019 through July 27, 2019.

SAQA has two new Global Exhibition calls for entry.  Musica! will debut March 2020 at National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky and Upcycle! which debuts at the 2019 International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas.

SAQA JAM member Judy Dales had a retrospective show at the Vermont Quilt Festival . There were fifty-six quilts on display covering much of Dales’s productive career as a quilt artist.

SAQA JAM member Jenny Bowker  has been made an Officer in the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday honors list. This award recognizes Bowker’s work on Australia-Middle East cultural relations through the preservation of traditional arts.  You can read more about Bowker’s award in this Canberra Times article. Also this month, Bowker’s quilt “After the Last Sky” received Best of Show at the 2018 Sydney Quilt ShowJenny Bowker was the Featured Artist in SAQA Journal #2. Congrats to Jenny for her well deserved recognition.

SAQA member Marion Coleman was awarded an NEA National Heritage Fellowship. This prestigious award recognizes the recipient’s’ artistic excellence and supports their continuing contributions to our nation’s traditional arts heritage. Congratulations to Marion!

Regional News
Members of the SAQA CO/UT/WY Region gathered in the Denver, Colorado area to form a new Local Connections group. You can read about their experience here on the SAQA blogYou can also find out more about how you might form a Local Connections group in your region by clicking here

Shifting Tides: Convergence in Cloth is a new regional SAQA exhibition. The call is open to SAQA members whose primary residence is in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, or Western Canada. Deadline for submissions in November 30, 2018.  This exhibition will debut at the 2019 SAQA Conference in San Jose, California.

Stitched Together is a SAQA Regional Show featuring the work of the Illinois/Wisconsin Region. The show is currently on view from June 23- July 21 at the Bloomingdale Park District Museum in Bloomingdale, Illinois.

The Schweinfurth Art Center is currently seeking submissions for the 2018 Quilts=Art=Quilts. the deadline for submitting work is Friday July 20.

QuiltCon 2019—the Modern Quilt Guild’s annual Conference—enrollment is now open for members. You can register for the 2019 event in Nashville, Tennessee here.

Benefit Auction 2018 Update
Thank you for donating to the 2018 SAQA Benefit Auction.  SAQA artists donated more than 440 pieces – a new record! SAQA staff has finished the process of formatting and uploading all of the quilts to our website. If you did not donate, you can still support SAQA by bidding and buying these works of art during the auction.  This year’s auction will take place online from September 14 through October 7. All proceeds help support SAQA’s exhibition and outreach programs. 

Upcoming Deadlines and Events for July 2018
The Special Events Committee is seeking presentation proposals for its annual conference in San Jose, CA in 2019.

“We are looking for compelling proposals on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, the business of art, social media marketing, principles of design and composition, understanding the jury process, getting work into exhibits or galleries, and other topics of interest to the SAQA membership. Presentations may take the form of lectures with visuals or panel discussions with a moderator and usually last between 60-90 minutes.”

To submit a proposal, please visit the SAQA Website and click on the “Call for Presenters” link. Proposals are due by July 15, 2018.
