Yvonne Porcella

It is with great sadness that SAQA has learned of the death of Yvonne Porcella, the founder and first president of SAQA.

Ms. Porcella’s vision to create a network of quilt artists who would pool their resources to support and expand the reach of quilt art was realized in 1989 with 50 artists throughout the United States. It has since broadened into a 3500+ member international organization that continually works to fulfill her vision. Her lasting legacy for SAQA and its members was her tireless devotion to supporting individual artists on their artistic journey.

In November, Yvonne was recorded by board member Lisa Ellis speaking at the opening reception for the SAQA Northern California/Northern Nevada regional exhibit “Strata” which Yvonne juried. Please watch the fascinating video below.

We are collecting remembrances for a tribute page. You may also wish to submit a photo of Yvonne for our slideshow. Please leave a remembrance for her family here.

  1. I am so sorry I never met Yvonne in person but after seeing this video, I know I missed an important connection to my creative life. What a wonderful, charming and warm person with a visionary approach to the future of incorporating fiber art into the “fine art” world. I didn’t start making fiber art until the late 90’s and have benefitted from all her work to help me find the resources I needed to get up to speed. What an amazing woman.
