Joanne Goranson
Fabric/Surface Design

I make Art Quilts for judged coompetitions and also do commissions for individuals and institutions. I teach on a private basis and do lectures for small groups. I am considered an expert of many thread techniques including bobbin drawing, thread painting, the use of metallic thread, adding couched embellishments, layering, dyeing and painting fabric, using unexpected materials and embellishments, and am known for doing many other unusual thread and embellishment techniques. I also teach on a privage basis and do lectures to small groups on thread techniques.

The quilt shown on this page is called "The Bridge" and includes picture of the whole quilt and a close-up. This Art Quilt was a semi-finalist in the AQS Des Moines, IA show in October of 2013. It is a representation of the Twin Cities of St Paul (in the upper portion) and Minneapolis (the lower part) and the Mississippi River that divides them. I used my own hand-dyed fabric and the streets of both cities have real street names next to them. I consider Minneapolis to be a more vibrant city even though I used the same colors for each city the St Paul ones are a little more muted.
