SAQA AUCTION 2008
SAQA has received 251 pieces of gorgeous donated art! Check out the images on the web site: http://www.saqa.com/newsebulletins/Squares08_1.aspx
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the bidding to start at 2:00 Eastern/11:00 Pacific on Monday, November 10th. We’ll again be dividing the pieces into three groups for the auction – final groupings will be determined once all the auction pieces have been received. The auction for Group I will begin November 10th. Group II will begin November 18th. And Group III will begin November 28th.
It’s important that everyone start putting the word out on any web lists that you belong to, at your guilds, to your friends and family, etc. Last time we raised $28,000 on word-of-mouth advertising alone. This time we're again depending on members to spread the word. In addition, Deidre Adams has designed the ads for the auction. They will be running in Quilting Arts, Fiberarts, American Craft, AmericanStyle, Selvedge. 5,000 postcards are being printed to hand out at various quilt shows, IQF-Houston and to send to SAQA’s VIP list.
OPT-OUT List & Office Computer Woes
SAQA has been asked if our members would enjoy receiving free copies of various fiber and art magazines. The most recent requests come from Interweave Press and AmericanStyle. The requesting organizations would have a one-time-only use of your name and address. They would not be able to use your address in any other way. This is a fairly painless way to raise some income for SAQA, so that SAQA will not have to raise membership dues to cover the increasing costs of doing business. If you do NOT wish SAQA to share your address with these other organizations, please email me (msielman@sbcglobal.net) and I will remove you from the list.
The office computer had to be replaced. While they transfer over the office files, there will be a brief delay in responding to email, etc. Please be patient.
Also, SAQA will be slowly transitioning over to using Constant Contact to send out the e.Bulletin. We hope that this will enable all members to receive the e.Bulletin in a timely fashion. You may receive two copies of the e.Bulletin for a while. We should have the new system up and running shortly.
DONATIONS
Individual donations currently total $22,904! The generosity of SAQA’s members and supporters provides funding for exhibits, print catalogs and outreach. Membership fees cover only 40% of the operating costs, so this additional support is critical in allowing SAQA to fund our exhibitions, publications and programs.

SAVE THE DATES – Art & Excellence Conference May 21-24, 2009 in Athens, Ohio
Don Bacigalupi, President, Director and CEO of the Toledo Museum of Art, has just agreed to be one of our keynote speakers at the conference. He was recently introduced to contemporary art quilts as one of the three jurors for Quilt Visions '08 and plans to speak on the place of art quilts in the contemporary art scene today. Other plans for the 2009 Art and Excellence Conference in conjunction with Quilt National ’09 in Athens, OH are firming up. Our second featured speaker after Saturday’s luncheon will be Alyson Stanfield, the ArtBizCoach and author of I’d Rather be in the Studio!
Our conference kick-off event will be an Artist ‘speed-dating’ mixer as a fun way to get to know the other attendees on Thursday evening.
Mini-workshop presentations on Friday will include: Sandra Sider (critiques), Gregory Case (digital photography basics), Carol Taylor (Pricing, Sales & Commissions), Pat Gould (digital entry preparation), Gwyned Trefethen (Time Management), Deb Cashatt and Kris Sazaki (digital designing with layers), and Lisa Chipetine and Michele Hardman (moderating a Marketing Outside the Box brainstorming session).
Several panel discussions, mentorship round tables, a trunk show and a Saturday evening barbeque have been added to the mix. And the Quilt National ’09 Opening, the Quilt National Banquet, the auction of Art Gallery in a Box IV, and the FOFA Sunday brunch are returning favorites.
Following up on the success of pre-conference workshops offered this year in Wayne, PA, we are offering six wonderful pre-conference 3-day workshops Monday through Wednesday (May 18 -20), 2009.
1. Silk/Textile Painting by Smadar Knobler
2. Shibori by Christine Zoller
3. Raw Edged Pieced Quilts by Dena Crain
4. Color Mastery by Maria Peagler
5. PhotoShop for Artists by Deidre Adams
6. Complex Designs by Leslie Gabriëlse
Class size will be limited to 15 students, so be on the look out for the sign-up form.
Detailed descriptions, registration information and registration forms will be available starting in late September.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR IQF-Houston
SAQA will again have a table in front of our exhibits (“Masters: Art Quilts” & “A Sense of Time”) at the International Quilt Festival in Houston (October 29-November 2). We will need volunteers to staff the table. Come and meet other SAQA members, rest your weary feet, and introduce our organization to the 55,000 visitors who come to Festival. If you can volunteer, please contact Vou Best (VBestDAJA@aol.com) with your preferred two-hour time slot.
We’re also looking for volunteers to present SAQA Lectures in the Festival Theater on the show floor. The Lectures should be educational about some aspect of art quilting. Typical audiences are around 100 visitors. PowerPoint presentations work well; slides don’t show up under the lighting conditions. And be sure to bring some actual work to share with the audience. SAQA will print up flyers advertising your Lecture and including an image of your work, but SAQA cannot cover any travel costs. If you’re interested, please send a description of your proposed lecture topic to msielman@sbcglobal.net.
THANKS TO THE VOLUNTEERS AT THE FESTIVAL OF QUILTS
A big thank you to the SAQA volunteers who staffed the SAQA table at the Festival of Quilts:
Lynne Seaman (volunteer coordinator), Grietje van der Veen, Irene MacWilliam, Maggie Farmer, Sandra Meech, Annedore Neumann, Margo van Strien, Sandra Wyman, Annelies Ghyselen, Flox den Hartog, and Jessica Abrahams.
I’ve added their names to the Gold Star Volunteers list. I cannot say often enough how critical SAQA’s volunteers are to its success.
NEW PAM JURY PROCESS
The Board has decided to modify the selection process for new Professional Artist Membership applications. Beginning January 1, 2009 a three-person committee will review new PAM applications on a quarterly basis. The review committee will consist of three PAM’s who are not board members. We are looking for volunteers (please email me if you’re interested msielman@sbcglobal.net). Each review committee group will serve for one year. The board is considering how to convene the group. Decisions will be based on the criteria listed on the web site under Guidelines for Becoming a PAM: http://www.saqa.com/members/PAM_Guidelines.aspx

NEW SERVICES FOR MEMBERS
1. Second region option: You can now select a second state or country to "belong" to as part of your member profile. For instance, if you are stationed in a different country for a time, you can select to be a part of the country you are from. Or if you live in Indiana close to Chicago, you can select Illinois and be a part of that region. Or if you live in DC and want to know what's happening in Virginia & the Carolinas, you can select Virginia and be notified of any events happening there.
Go to the Members tab and select Members Home here: http://www.saqa.com/login.aspx?redir=members/home.aspx
Log in with your username and password. Under Manage Your Account, select "Change your username, password, etc." Choose the second state and/or second country you would like to belong to, type in the validation code at the bottom of the page and then click Update Profile. You will now be listed in both regions and receive news from both.
2. FEDEX Discount program: Barb McKie has been working hard to arrange shipping discounts for SAQA members. FedEx has a program for small businesses which we are being invited to join to receive discounts on shipping. From Barb: "To get FedEx discounts, the simplest route turned out to be to join an existing discount group: Make Mine a Million.org, otherwise also called Count Me In.org (CMI). This organization, which is primarily for entrepreneurial women to help them hone their business skills, get discounts for their activities, etc. does not discriminate by gender, so the men in our midst are free to sign up as well to take advantage of the opportunities involved.
There are two ways to sign up: Go to www.makemineamillion.org and sign in under Join Us Today. Then choose the FedEx discount offer and sign up there. OR Call 1-800-475-6708 and tell the FedEx representative that you wish to sign up for the CMI/Make-Mine-A-Million discount program. You may be asked for a "Promotion Code". If this happens, tell the operator that you don't have one and were told one was not needed, but that you are signing up for the CMI/Make-Mine-A-Million program.
PORTFOLIO 13 POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
If you would like to show the slide show presentation or SAQA Portfolio 13 PowerPoint to a group of friends, a quilting guild, a class you’re teaching, a civic group, or anyone else who might be interested, contact Clairan Ferrono (fabric8tions@hotmail.com).
BROCHURES/JOURNALS AVAILABLE FOR TEACHERS:
If you’re teaching, please let me know and I’d be happy to send you brochures to hand out to your students. I can also send back issues of the Journal, catalogs, etc. Just send an email with what you need and include your mailing address (msielman@sbcglobal.net).
OTHER INFORMATION:
From Lark Books:
Lark Books seeks excellent images to publish in a juried collection of quilts for 500 Quilts, the latest in our acclaimed 500 Series to be published in Spring 2010.
Both art quilts and traditional quilts are welcome in fabric and other media. Diverse designs, materials, and techniques are desired, from traditional to cutting edge. We accept high-quality transparencies, slides, and digital images. There is no entry fee. Important note: Lark Books will only publish photos of entries containing text and images that are free of copyright, or for which the artist (or approved institution) holds copyright.
Artists will receive full acknowledgment within the book, one complimentary copy, and discounts on the purchase of additional books. Artists retain copyright of their work. Entries must be postmarked by October 24, 2008. Guidelines and entry forms are now available on Lark¹s website: http://www.larkbooks.com/submissions/artist-submissions
From the Windham Textile History Museum (CT):
In spring/summer 2009, the textile museum will exhibit "Celebration Quilts," featuring both traditional and art quilts that commemorate weddings, anniversaries, etc. (It will be the museum's 20th anniversary year and they're planning lots of great events.) The museum is looking for commemorative quilts of any type to include in a special exhibit. Anyone interested should email Michele Palmer (mpalmer@fabricmuseum.org) with a photo and brief description by Nov. 1, 2008.
From Quilt National:
There has been some confusion about the image size requirements and how to successfully format them -
1) Please read the entry form carefully.
2) VERY IMPORTANT NOTE! You CANNOT make a high resolution image from a lower resolution image. You must save your original image and use it to make both the low resolution image (96 dpi) for the jury image and use the original image again for the high resolution image (300 dpi)which may be used for printed materials.
3) Your original image must be AT LEAST 300 DPI to begin the process.
4) Please refer to the Quilt National website FAQ regarding a step by step procedure for converting images to the appropriate resolution.

From the European Quilt Triennial:
