Rita Hannafin's List:
"Here are my top 10, not in any order, and there were many more I would love to own as well:

1. Page 1a, row 12 Heidi Stegehuis-Ihle "Down by the River"  This evokes a very real misty feeling of early morning water.
2. Page 1b, row 5 Elaine Quehl "Hosta" Very interesting treatment of a nature close-up.
3. Page 1b, row 5 Susan Shie "Obama" A fantastic historical treasure no matter what happens in the election.
4. Page 1b row 11 Linda Colsh I am attracted to the imagery and her use of muted colors and texture. I see my grandmother.
5. Page 2a, row 7 Judith Content  "Sudden Showers" I love the texture of the silk.  Every time I see it, I tumble into it.  I covet this piece.
6. Page 2a, row 7 Nelda Warkentin "Color Study" Great texture and depth.  Keeps my interest, fun.
7.  Page 2a, row 12  Martha Sielman "Omama" I like the story behind the piece and the use of the photo.  I am attracted to the Tree of Life imagery as well.  It is a personal piece to me.
8. Page 2b, row 3  Leslie Gabrielse "Together" I love his use of color with abandonment.  Great texture and different fabrics used in unexpected places.  Makes me want to study the piece more.
9.  Page 3a, row 9  Mary Pal "Portrait" This is simply astounding for a very simple piece.
10.  Page 3a, row 14 Noriko Endo "Autumn in Ohio"  I want to walk in her woods.  So much texture and depth and work in this piece.

Cindy Cooksey's List:

SAQA Exhibit News:  Calls for Entries
**NOTE: SAQA exhibits are open to ALL members, unless there is a geographical restriction.
DEADLINE is November 7th for "SAQA@20":

In celebration of SAQA's 20th year as an international community of artists, the Exhibition Committee has planned a special exhibition: "SAQA@20: Art & Excellence".  This will be an invitational exhibition curated by Patricia Bolton, Editor in Chief of both Quilting Arts and Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazines and a SAQA board member.

There are NO jury fees for this exhibition.  This is an invitational process: Patricia Bolton will be selecting one piece each from artists whose work she feels best expresses this concept of SAQA's international community.  Since she is not familiar with every member's work, she has asked that members who are interested in being considered submit their website URL, plus one image of work that they feel would be especially appropriate for this exhibition and that would be available from September 2009 through September 2011.  If you do not have a website, you may send up to three images instead.

A full prospectus is on the web site:
http://www.saqa.com/members/EntryForms.aspx
Receive-by Deadline is November 7, 2008.

NEW Call for Entries - Meet SAQA's Artists: SAQA's 20th Anniversary Trunk Show (non-juried) - portion to become part of IQSC's permanent collection
SAQA is almost 20 years old, with more than 2200 members from all over the world.  The Exhibition Committee wanted to make that world a little smaller by introducing ourselves to each other through our artwork.  As part of our 20th Anniversary celebration, we are planning "Meet SAQA's Artists: SAQA's 20th Anniversary Trunk Show".

These works will be available for travel to each of our regions, upon request, during our 20th Anniversary celebration.  The regions may share them with their members and use them to showcase SAQA and its mission.

A portion of "Meet SAQA's Artists" will then be selected to become an important study collection at the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  IQSC is devoted to the preservation, study and exhibition of quilts and to sharing its resources with the public.  The donation of the selected works from the "Meet SAQA's Artists" project will create an important archive representing both SAQA and the artists who are working in the studio art quilt medium in 2009-a historical benchmark to assist future historians, academics, writers and others tracking the art quilt movement. To have a permanent, archived collection of representative work at the IQSC and the University is an important realization of SAQA's educational mission.

To participate you will need to create a piece of your work that showcases a process, technique, or style that represents your artistic voice.  The size of the piece needs to fit a 12" square mat with an 8" square opening.  Because the artwork will be behind the mat, the size should be a minimum of 9 inches, maximum of 11 inches per side; remembering that only the central 8x8-inch square space will be visible through the mat. The edges need not be finished.
The prospectus for this project is available on the Members Home page of the website.  There are no fees.

Donations

Individual donations currently total $23,543!  The generosity of SAQA's members and supporters has surpassed SAQA's 2008 goal for individual donations of $18,000.  We cannot put on exhibits, print catalogs or do outreach without this support. Membership fees cover only 40% of the operating costs, and this additional support is critical in allowing SAQA to fund our exhibitions, publications and programs.

SAQA Store News

NEW TITLES THIS MONTH:
(Look for reviews next month of new titles by Patricia Bolton, Rose Hughes and Ann Johnston.)

Brackmann book coverThe Surface Designer's Handbook by Holly Brackman (Interweave Press, 2006) ISBN 978-1-931499-90-3, $29.95, 140 pages, spiral bound, glossary, bibliography, list of resources, index.

If you dye, paint, or print on fabric, this book is a must-have.  This is an all-in-one resource that you'll refer to again and again.  Holly Brackman begins with explanations of the differences among all the different types of dyes, which work best for which effects, what safety precautions to take, etc.  She gives information on preparing different types of fibers and how to calculate stock solutions and dye quantities.  Then she reviews similar information for screenprinting, discharging, devore, monoprinting, stamping, stencilling and resists.  The samples are gorgeous and inspiring.

Digital Essentials coverDigital Essentials by Gloria Hansen (The Electric Quilt Company, 2008), ISBN 1-893824-64-0, $29.95, 208 pages, glossary, index.

Gloria Hansen designed my personal web site and the web site for Fiber Revolution, an exhibition group that I founded in the northeastern US.  She's a person that I regularly turn to for advice on anything having to do with computers.  Her answers are always clear, informative and easy to understand.  So a book by Gloria on how to use digital image software is a surefire hit.  If you have Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro and are having trouble learning how to work with your images, buy this book.  Gloria shows you step-by-step how to calibrate your monitor, resize, work in layers, crop, adjust the color, and choose the best format to save to.  She explains everything clearly and gives plenty of additional resources for information once you've mastered these basics.

We can accept digital photos only. Images will be chosen on the basis of artistic merit as well as photo quality. To improve your chances of being selected, send only your best photos and use the same considerations you would for entering a juried show, which means sharp focus, even lighting, no extraneous hands or feet or garage doors showing in the photo, etc.

Send a digital image with a resolution of no less than 1800 pixels on the longest side, in jpeg format. Label the file with your last name followed by partial title (example: smith_dreamingtrees.jpg). In the body of the e-mail, Include caption information consisting of your name, size in inches, year created, your web site URL (if applicable), and a very brief statement describing something interesting about the work, perhaps your inspiration or your process. Send your images to saqa@deidreadams.com. (Note: This address will be used ONLY for the image gallery.)
