2009 is SAQA's 20th Anniversary!
SAQA Needs Your Support This Year --
What your contributions support:
- This year we are traveling 10 exhibits, which will visit 17 venues and be seen by well over 100,000 visitors.
- We are traveling the SAQA Trunk Show to every region that requests it as a way to share what is happening in SAQA artistically. 50 pieces will then be selected to become a permanent part of the International Quilt Study Center's collection as a record of the art quilt in 2009.
- We are producing two print catalogs ("Transformations 09: Reflections" and a joint catalog for "SAQA@20" and "A Sense of Humor"), as well as a CD catalog for "Points of View." The catalogs will be sent to participating artists, as well as to our collectors and museums lists.
- We are publishing 4,000 copies of Portfolio 16 and mailing it to collectors, galleries, museums, art consultants, and interior designers, as well as selling it through Amazon and through quilt stores.
- We hosted the "Art & Excellence" conference in conjunction with the Opening for Quilt National. DVD's of the keynote speakers and panel presentations are now available for regions to borrow.
- We will publish four information-packed issues of the SAQA Journal, which are mailed to members and to our list of BFA/MFA textile programs.
Membership fees cover only 41% of the budget, so we depend on other sources of income to support all of these programs and publications.
There was a small surplus last year, so why is fundraising so important this year? There are three main reasons:
1. Corporate giving is down due to the poor economy - we've raised only 60% of what we were able to raise last year.
2. The conference was only three-quarters full, so it lost money.
3. All of our costs are up, such as postage, shipping costs, credit card fees, etc.
There are several ways that you can help:
- Keep volunteering. SAQA runs on volunteer power. Every hour that you give means that we can continue to keep staff costs to a bare minimum.
- Thank you to everyone who sent in an Auction donation. While it would be a miracle if we raised as much money this year as last year, the Auction is a huge contribution to SAQA's bottom line.
- Bid on your favorite Auction quilts! And tell all your friends to bid too. We need to get the word out about the Auction!
- Buy books and other items through the SAQA Bookstore. A percentage of each purchase goes to support SAQA.
- Make a donation. Whether it's a Loose Change monthly pledge or a donation when you renew, your support is critical to SAQA's efforts. You can donate any time online through the website: https://www.saqa.com/donations.aspx?
NEW! OneCause.com shopping - this is a new way to support SAQA without having it cost you anything. I did this for several years when my children were in elementary school and raised $700 for the school without having it cost me a dime.
- It's easy - just sign up at OneCause.com and make Studio Art Quilt Associates the charity you wish to support (you have to search for Studio Art Quilt Associates, not SAQA). All they ask is your name and email address.
- Each time you shop online, go to OneCause.com first and click through from there to your usual vendors, such as Amazon, Netflix, Lands End, JCPenney, etc. That's all there is to it.
- Each vendor will donate a percentage of your purchase to SAQA. (The percentage varies by vendor.) You may get an email or two per week from OneCause giving you coupons or telling you about a sale, but they do NOT give out your information to anyone else.
However you choose to support SAQA, your support is critical to keep our organization growing and thriving. Thank you for your support!

SAQA 2009 Benefit Auction
|
It's time to start getting the word out that the SAQA 2009 Benefit Auction will start Thursday, September 10th at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
It will again be a reverse auction but the price points are slightly different from previous years: $750, $550, $350, $250, $150 and $75.
Add the Auction to your blog. Send it out with your newsletter. Place it on your website. Tell your quilt guild. Tell your friends and family. Tell your collectors. Tell anyone and everyone else about this opportunity to purchase great art at a great price and support the work that SAQA does.
We've received 213 wonderful SAQA 2009 Benefit Auction quilts as of this afternoon. You can see the donations which have already been photographed at http://www.saqa.com/newsebulletins/Squares09_1.aspx
On July 8th Barb McKie will be photographing the rest of the auction pieces. It takes her a few days to process and color correct them. We will then post the images as quickly as we can.
PLEASE CHECK the website to make sure that the information posted with your donation is accurate. Your image will contain a link to your web site if you have one. If the link isn't there, please let Eileen Doughty (ef.doughty@verizon.net) know the correct URL.
This year we're also including a brief description of each piece: "What Your Computer Doesn't Show You," since many details do not show up well on the computer. PLEASE CHECK that the description is accurate and let me know if it needs to be revised (msielman@sbcglobal.net). NOTE that the descriptions have to be limited in length due to space requirements - it should be accurate but may not be able to include all possible information.
Thanks to Eileen Doughty and Jen Solon for doing all the work to put the Auction images on the website!
THANK YOU to everyone who created a 12" square Auction piece to support SAQA's programs!

SAQA Exhibit News: Calls for Entries
**NOTE: SAQA exhibits are open to ALL members, unless there is a geographical restriction |

DEADLINE: October 15, 2009 at 11:59 Eastern
Premiere location: Festival of Quilts, Birmingham, England
Date: August 2010
Additional venue locations to be determined.
Theme: Art Meets Science
This exhibit explores the unexpected intersections of two seemingly different disciplines, Art and Science. The works focus upon inspiration from scientific theories or phenomena expressed in new or unexpected ways, from the harmonies of randomness to the dynamics produced by scientific imagery.
General Exhibit Description:
In order to create a visually-coherent display, each participating artist is asked to create work that fits within a maximum area of one meter square area (100cm x 100cm). This can be a single piece or multiple pieces that fit within those boundaries. The work can be smaller than one meter square.
Juror:
David W. Fraser, MD
Curator: Jill Jensen (jilljensenart@hotmail.com)
Calendar:
* September 15, 2009 Online Entry Opens (www.saqa.com through the Members Home page)
* October 15, 2009 Online Entry Deadline at 11:59pm Eastern
* October 15-November 15, 2009 Jury process
* November 15, 2009: Notification of acceptance (All notifications will be forwarded via email.)
* December 1, 2009: Print quality images due to Deidre Adams and curator for publicity and catalog
* July 16, 2010: Artwork to be RECEIVED at Quilts, Inc. in Houston, TX
Fee: $30 for entry of up to 3 pieces. Members must pay their fee using a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) through the SAQA website.
NOTE: SAQA's jury fees have been raised to $30 to cover the costs of the online jury system. Since you will no longer have to create a CD and pay for postage to mail it (not to mention overnight shipping fees when things get left until the night before!), the Exhibition Committee hopes that this small increase in fees will be acceptable.
Exhibit Name: A Sense of Direction: Sightlines (Invitational) -
DEADLINE August 15, 2009
Venues:
· International Quilt Festival Houston, TX November 2011
· International Quilt Festival, Chicago, IL April 2012
· International Quilt Festival, Long Beach, CA July 2012
· Additional venues to be determined August 2012-2014
Invitational Curator: Virginia A. Spiegel (Virginia@VirginiaSpiegel.com)
Exhibit Concept:
A Sense of Direction: Sightlines will be an installation of artworks from 14 invited artists featuring a sightline linking all the artwork in the exhibit. Curator Virginia Spiegel will select the artists from those who express interest (see How to be Considered below). Artists will choose their own themes and create a number of artworks to fit within a 7' high by 10' wide space with a line, literal or implied, running through each of the quilts.
Go to: http://tactilequilts.com/eyeline/index.html to see the exhibition that inspired Sightlines. Thank you to Jenny Bowker for her help and support to the SAQA Exhibition Committee and to Virginia Spiegel in developing the idea for A Sense of Direction: Sightlines.
The Exhibition Committee is very excited about the potential of this exhibition and hopes that it can travel to several fine art museums, as well as to the International Quilt Festivals in Houston, Chicago and Long Beach. However, it requires a major commitment from the selected artists. Selected artists must agree to create a body of work to the specifications described below between selection (August 31, 2009) and finalization of the exhibition in February 2010. Selected artists must also agree that the works will remain available for the exhibition from completion through the end of the exhibition's travels in 2014. The long lead time between creation of the artwork and beginning of the exhibition in October 2011 is necessary to be able to propose the exhibition to museums which set their calendars several years in advance. Artwork may be sold, but only with the proviso that the new owner agrees to loan the artwork to SAQA until September 2014.
Exhibit Description:
Each artist will create from five to eight works. At least one, but no more than four, will be major works (either horizontal or vertical orientation) with a line, literal or implied, running through each of the quilts. Four will be 8"x8" quilts, to facilitate a visual connection between their work and the next artist's work.
The sightline will begin in the horizontal center of the first two 8" squares, begin and end at a point 60" from the floor for the major artwork(s), then continue through the last two 8" squares at their horizontal center. The sightline can meander through the major artwork(s), so long as it begins and ends at the 60" point. Each 10' wide space will feature two of the 8" squares, followed by the major artwork(s), then the last two 8" squares at the end with 1" spacing between all works. Allowing for the four linking 8" squares means the major artworks must utilize 6'10" of the 10' wide space and, of course, be no more than 7' high.

Meet SAQA's Artists: SAQA's 20th Anniversary Trunk Show
Curator Vou Best is sending the three groups of pieces out to requesting regions. Vou says that she has dates available throughout the summer - just ask! (vbestdaja@aol.com)
Regions may share them with their members and use them to showcase SAQA and its mission. We're asking that regions take up a collection when they share the Trunk Show to cover the costs of shipping.
All of the Trunk Show pieces were displayed during the Art & Excellence conference, and they looked wonderful! After the Trunk Show has finished traveling, a portion will be selected to become an important permanent study collection at the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
IQSC is devoted to the preservation, study and exhibition of quilts and to sharing its resources with the public. The donation of the selected works from the "Meet SAQA's Artists" project will create an important archive representing both SAQA and the artists who are working in the studio art quilt medium in 2009-a historical benchmark to assist future historians, academics, writers and others tracking the art quilt movement. To have a permanent, archived collection of representative work at the IQSC and the University is an important realization of SAQA's educational mission.

NEW books in the SAQA Bookstore:
http://www.saqa.com/aboutus/SAQA_StoreThumbnails.aspx
Inspired to Quilt: Creative Experiments in Art Quilt Imagery by Melanie Testa (Interweave Press, 2009, ISBN 978-1-59668-096-8, $24.95, 136 pages)
Need to get your creative juices flowing? Spend some time in Melanie's world - journaling, experimenting, and playing with your ideas and materials. Includes a good overview with step-by-step directions of dyeing, printing, soy wax resist, and painting on fabric. The strength of this book is Melanie's explanation of how to use your journal of ideas and to put all the techniques together to create a work of art. She explains and demonstrates how she uses her signature technique of layers of sheers to create layers of design, and how a single image pulled from her journal can be used in a multitude of different designs. I found this section fascinating, as I've always thought of using images as "one and done." Melanie mines each image for a variety of uses. Instructions on how to use quilting and embellishment to highlight elements of your design, several small projects, and a gallery fill the last section of this book. Inspiring!
Clare Plug: Look South (Hawkes Bay Museum & Art Gallery, Napier, New Zealand, 2009, ISBN 978-0-473-14879-9, $20)
"Look South" is an exhibition of Clare Plug's work at the Hawkes Bay Museum & Art Gallery in Napier, New Zealand. The works in the exhibition are the result of three years of new work following a artist residency in Antarctica. Three essays explore different aspects of the exhibition. Lucy Hammonds (Curator of Design Collections at Hawkes Bay Museum & Art Gallery) describes Clare's artistic pathway and how the Antarctic residency affected her work. Douglas Lloyd Jenkins (Director of Hawkes Bay Museum & Art Gallery) describes the history of the Robert Scott expedition to the South Pole and the importance of flags and textiles to the expedition and how that affected Clare in her response to the Antarctic environment. Ursula Ryan (Information Advisor, Antarctica New Zealand) looks at the Heroic Era and its periods of exploration and how the artifacts from that time affected Clare's work. A fascinating body of work and a fascinating catalog.

Not only will this book inspire art quilts, it will inspire you. Leni shows clearly how to evaluate your own photos to find interesting ideas for art quilts, how to use cropping to eliminate extra visual information, and how to combine several photos to create a stronger composition. Digital cameras allow us to capture so many wonderful images, but they're not all great art quilt candidates. Being able to follow Leni's thought processes as she evaluates different photos and combines them to create a strong composition is extremely helpful. Good instruction in art quilt construction and thread painting shows the reader how to translate the photo collage into fabrics. Especially valuable is the section on creating faces.
