SAQA Board Voted to Oppose Orphan Works Legislation
The SAQA Board has been following the Orphan Works proposed legislation closely. On June 19, 2008 the Board voted unanimously to put the SAQA organization on record opposing the Orphan Works legislation as it is now proposed.

The Board took the necessary time to research the issue and to get legal advice on what SAQA can and cannot do without adversely affecting our 501c3 status as a nonprofit organization.

There has been considerable email traffic about the Orphan Works legislation among Board members and many, if not all, Board members have taken individual action, contacting their members of Congress one or more times. Due to the scheduling of Board Meetings, this was the first opportunity since discussion and legal checks for the Board to vote and put the organization on record opposing the issue.

Additionally, the Board urges all SAQA members to research the issue for themselves (Gloria Hansen and others have posted important information and links for taking action in the Yahoo group message thread—search on “Orphan Works” from the SAQA Yahoo group home page) and take action individually by contacting Congress and following up if you get a form response that you don’t agree with. This is a very serious issue with serious consequences for artists.

EXHIBITION COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. International members do not have to ship hanging rods to SAQA exhibitions. The increases in cost for international shipping have made sending rods with artwork prohibitively expensive. SAQA will arrange to have rods provided for work juried into SAQA exhibitions.

2. Members are urged to keep careful records of the exhibition dates for which their artwork may be accepted. Being accepted and then not having the work available either due to sales or to double-booking is unprofessional and causes problems for exhibition organizers. The Exhibition Committee has recommended that withdrawal of work that has been accepted into a juried SAQA exhibition after the jurying has occurred will result in a 2-year disqualification to enter any other SAQA calls for entry.

SAQA AUCTION 2008
I’ve received 63 pieces so far, and they’re gorgeous! Check out the images already up on the web site: http://www.saqa.com/newsebulletins/Squares08_1.aspx
The auction will go live November 10th, just in time for holiday gift-giving. Please support SAQA by making a One-Foot Square for SAQA Auction 2008. The deadline is August 15, 2008. Create a label with your name and the title, include your web site so that we can link to it, and send the finished pieces to: Martha Sielman, 52 Charles Lane, Storrs, CT 06268.
If you can also send a good quality jpg (no larger than 800 x 800 pixels) with a pure white background, or cropped to the edges of the quilt, to Eileen Doughty (ef.doughty@verizon.net), that will help get your piece up on the web site faster.

DONATIONS
Donations currently total $17,523! We only need a few more generous donors to reach SAQA’s 2008 goal for individual donations of $18,000 – help us meet the final 3% of our goal! We cannot put on exhibits, print catalogs or do outreach without this support. Membership fees cover only 40% of the operating costs, and this additional support is critical in allowing SAQA to fund our exhibitions, publications and programs.

NEW SERVICES FOR MEMBERS
1. Second region option: You can now select a second state or country to "belong" to as part of your member profile. For instance, if you are stationed in a different country for a time, you can select to be a part of the country you are from. Or if you live in Indiana close to Chicago, you can select Illinois and be a part of that region. Or if you live in DC and want to know what's happening in Virginia & the Carolinas, you can select Virginia and be notified of any events happening there.

Go to the Members tab and select Members Home: http://www.saqa.com/login.aspx?redir=members/home.aspx
Log in with your username and password. Under Manage Your Account, select "Change your username, password, etc." Choose the second state and/or second country you would like to belong to, type in the validation code at the bottom of the page and then click Update Profile. You will now be listed in both regions and receive news from both.

2. FEDEX Discount program: Barb McKie has been working hard to arrange shipping discounts for SAQA members. FedEx has a program for small businesses which we are being invited to join to receive discounts on shipping. From Barb: "To get FedEx discounts, the simplest route turned out to be to join an existing discount group: Make Mine a Million.org, otherwise also called Count Me In.org (CMI). This organization, which is primarily for entrepreneurial women to help them hone their business skills, get discounts for their activities, etc. does not discriminate by gender, so the men in our midst are free to sign up as well to take advantage of the opportunities involved.

There are two ways to sign up: Go to www.makemineamillion.org and sign in under Join Us Today. Then choose the FedEx discount offer and sign up there. OR Call 1-800-475-6708 and tell the FedEx representative that you wish to sign up for the CMI/Make-Mine-A-Million discount program. You may be asked for a "Promotion Code". If this happens, tell the operator that you don't have one and were told one was not needed, but that you are signing up for the CMI/Make-Mine-A-Million program.

NEW VIRTUAL EXHIBIT ON SAQA WEB SITE
This month’s guest curator is Marie Z. Johansen. “In Search of Peace” is the title of the virtual exhibition that she curated: http://www.saqa.com/galleries/mini_gallery.aspx?galid=39
Marie writes, “The word ‘Peace’ has figured prominently in my thoughts recently. Peace that has a more global aspect, as well as personal peace. Too often our daily lives bring us into chaos so, at times, I prefer to look at imagery that brings me to a place of contemplation, provides me with a sense of peacefulness, or brings me to a still point in time. It is not necessarily the color that is used, or the forms either for that matter - there really is no single word that I could use to describe this collection of images that do, indeed, bring me to a calming place.”

SAQA STORE NEWS
NEW BOOK:
Rayna Gillman Create Your Own Hand-Printed ClothCreate Your Own Hand-Printed Cloth: Stamp, Screen & Stencil with Everyday Objects by Rayna Gillman, C&T Publishing, 2008, ISBN 978-1-57120-439-4, $27.95, 96 pages, Supplies and sources, Index.

Rayna creates wonderful visual textures on the fabrics that she uses in her art, and in this book she shows step-by-step how to use a variety of easy techniques to make your own hand-printed cloth. She covers stamping and stenciling with found objects (my favorite is the pattern she creates using a potato masher), random screenprinting, gelatin (as in jello) plate printing, discharge, soy wax batik and rubbings. What sets this book apart from others is her attention to illustrating how each step changes the look of the fabric she’s creating. The directions are clear, and the examples are inspiring. Rayna also gives advice about such critical topics as “Knowing when enough is enough – stop and wait overnight before adding more” and “How to go back in when the fabric is just plain ugly – try cutting it up and using the pieces.” This book will definitely entice to you into your studio to play with your own collection of everyday objects.

MARKETING ANECDOTES FROM FELLOW MEMBERS
From Sandy Snowden - Make Yourself Known
Martha is often encouraging us to find ways of making our work known. I have been asked to join the teaching staff at the Reading Community College, here in Berkshire, UK. They had been hearing about my work through my friend who teaches there, and approached me.

Now, they also asked if I would come with some of my work to a sort of open weekend they were holding as part of an Arts Festival with open artist studios in North Reading, where one of the learning centers is located. I was also asked to demo some work on the machine. I have been right out straight finishing my Bernina garment (it went out by courier on Thurs. afternoon), and didn't feel I had much of a brain left to do this. However, I knew it was important, even if it was just to encourage learners to sign up for my course in the Autumn.

Well, I was to be there for the session this afternoon. Along with having people being interested in the course, I had some other very good opportunities. The local paper came to take photos, and liked the way my red coat stood out (http://www.sandysnowden.com/wearableart/tudorglows.htm), so photographed me with it with other student work in the background. Then a man who runs a website about what is on in the Reading area came round. He went round with the video while my friend explained the work on the walls, etc. then he came and did a short video of me doing free motion embroidery!! So, all in all it was a good day.

I also had a good chat with the chap who is in charge of marketing. He has the idea of a little shop in which student work can be sold. This will be ideal, as the class I will be teaching involves learning various decorative techniques, which can then be applied to a variety of projects...wall
hangings, cushions, scarves, boxes, etc. If any of them really get a bug for this, it would be a good way for them to gain confidence about their work. So, he is going to see if this is something that the college is happy to do, and I have been invited to be part of the group getting it organized.

Oh, and I have been asked by the library again to have another display of work in the front entrance. They always ask how I am getting on with projects, and know when I am very busy, as I order audio books to listen to when I really need to buckle down and get things done. Lately I have been through more of those than I can count!
