The Visioning Project revolves around visualizing goals and dreams - and making them happen. By making a public commitment, the artist is inspired to achieve a specific goal. Some goals are very specific, such as gaining a private commission, getting gallery representation, or selling a work. Other goals are more developmental: building a cohesive body of work or producing work regularly. The Visioning Project members are wonderful in helping each other with support, networking, and resource information. If you are interested in joining, please contact Helen Conway.
The SAQArtique group is open to all SAQA members. Members trust in each other to make honest comments about the issues that they wish to have critiqued. The critiques are all in the spirit of a shared interest in quilting as an art form and improvement of each person's talents. The requirements for belonging to a group are simply that each member is expected to post at least one of her/his own works every 3 months and to participate in all critiques of other members' work. If you are interested in joining, please contact Martha Ginn.

Where can I see the Thank You Gifts?
We have created a website page for the Thank You Gifts program.
How often can SAQA members select a membership drive Thank You Gift?
Members may select one gift per quarter when they refer two or more new members.
How does the Thank You Gifts selection process work?
The member referring the most new members in that quarter will select from that quarter's Thank You Gifts list first. The member referring the second-most new members in that quarter will pick second, and so on. In the event of a tie, the member identified as having recruited that number of new members earliest will pick first.

This month's guest curator, Cynthia Wenslow, has selected Tesserae.
Cynthia wrote: "In art the term "tesserae" refers to the small pieces that create a pattern or picture in a mosaic when used together. Of course, traditional patchwork also utilized this approach, even though the materials in play were quite different.
"The art quilts chosen for this gallery strongly reference the tradition of making a larger, unified, whole from small, clearly distinct pieces, many of which are geometric in nature."

There are seven different trunk shows of small matted pieces. They are available to travel to your region any time through October 2013.
We hope that you will find venues where these wonderful gems can be displayed as a way to educate about our medium. Perhaps there's a library, community center, or art center in your town that has a display space. If you belong to a quilt guild, talk to the program chair about using this as a program. We can also arrange to send you our PowerPoint presentation that explains about art quilts and about SAQA. And it would be a great time to share your own artwork.
On the Trunk Show pages, you can search by Trunk Show letter (each Trunk Show has its own page) or by artist (through the index). At the bottom of each trunk show page, there is a Google calendar that shows where the trunk will be exhibited. When you click on the colored bar in the calendar, you will see details about each venue and dates.
A "Learn More" link explains what the trunk show is and a "Contact Us" link is above the calendar so that members or other interested parties can request a trunk viewing in their area. If you are interested in hosting a trunk show, please contact your regional rep.

SAQA Urban Textures Fabric Collection
Open to ALL SAQA members
In celebration of SAQA's 25th Anniversary in 2014, Luana Rubin of eQuilter.com has arranged for Andover Fabrics to print a SAQA Urban Textures fabric collection. This collection will be based on designs by SAQA members, and Andover will donate a percentage of the collection's sales to SAQA.
Luana Rubin will be the juror for the fabric collection designs. The SAQA Urban Textures fabric collection will consist of six to eight designs printed in multiple colorways. Use any artistic medium that expresses this theme.

Celebrating Silver
OPEN to ALL SAQA members
Exhibition Concept:
As part of SAQA's 25th Anniversary, we will be Celebrating Silver. Silver is indispensable. From industrial use to decoration, technology, photography and medicine, its unique properties of strength, malleability, reflectivity and conductivity make it an irreplaceable force in the global market. In addition to its physical properties silver is recognized as a symbol of love, insurance and commitment for twenty-five years. We invite you to share your reflections on the precious metal's economic and symbolic value in order to celebrate SAQA's 25th anniversary.
The juror will select approximately thirty artists to create artworks specifically for this commemorative exhibition. She will endeavor to form a cohesive exhibition that includes a wide range of creative styles, techniques and imagery.

SAQA 2014 Anniversary Trunk Show
OPEN to ALL SAQA members
Join SAQA in celebrating our 25th amazing year with your trunk show submission! This traveling exhibition asks SAQA members to create a 10" x 7" art quilt that showcases their artistic expression.
The 2014 Anniversary Trunk Show will premiere at the 2014 SAQA conference in Washington, DC, and then travel all across the United States and around the world.
A group of quilts from this exhibition will be chosen by jurors Linda Colsh and Margaret "Peg" Keeney to become a permanent part of the collection of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.
Submissions for the 2014 Anniversary Trunk Show must meet the following criteria:
*Quilted pieces must have three layers, and measure 10" high x 7" wide (25.4 x 17.8 cm) in a PORTRAIT orientation. All embellishments must fit within the 10" x 7" size.
*SAQA will mount artwork on a 12 x 9" black backing board.
*Quilts could travel for up to three years. They must stay with the Trunk during the entire exhibition period.
*Participation fee is $10 to cover cost of materials and return shipping.
*If you wish your quilt to be for sale, please indicate its price on the entry form. (Otherwise,
*Due to the constraints of international travel costs, SAQA will not be insuring this exhibition. An insurance waiver is included in the form.
Quilts are due no later than Friday, January 31, 2014 to the SAQA 2014 Trunk Show Coordinator, Eileen Doughty.

Exhibition Concept:
There are many stories of hope across the globe. Both individuals and small groups are working on projects that when added together make a positive impact on increasing the quality of life on this planet. Earth Stories will celebrate the stories of people or projects that enhance the planet, make a significant difference in restoring and/or protecting the environment, increase sustainability and otherwise improve the earth we all occupy.
25 artists from around the world will be chosen to interpret a "story" of their choice. Each artist will feature a project or person of their choice; the views presented by the artist do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of SAQA or MSU, neither of which endorses any person, project or organization.

Theme: Mental illness carries with it a stigma; many of us have experience with disorders, temporary or permanent, curable or not, that in the past and in some cultures even today would be labeled as crazy. That stigma can make it difficult to admit its effect on our loved ones or ourselves. Disorders as common as anxiety or depression, or less common, like schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder, can have a devastating effect on families and friends, and on ourselves. Negativity towards those who have these disorders often causes many people to keep the diagnosis hidden from friends and family.

Exhibition Name: Radical Elements
Our physical world is created out of the chemical elements, from hydrogen to platinum to arsenic. For this exhibit, each of the selected artists will create a new work that is influenced by an element from the periodic table. Inspirations can come from anything relating to that element, whether it is a play on the name, its color or the products made from it. Both representational and abstract works are welcomed.
As the second part of the Radical Elements theme, the artists will also be asked to move quilting beyond the usual materials of fabric and thread, exploring the function and decorative properties of different surfaces and stitching materials. This exhibit is the first to embrace the newly expanded definition of an art quilt and will be a signature exhibition for SAQA.

In this exhibit, you have free rein to explore the many facets of what 'text messages' means to you--from the obvious connection to modern technology to works comprised solely of actual or implied writing. To improve your chances of being selected, send only your best photos and use the same considerations you would for entering a juried show, which means sharp focus, even lighting, no extraneous hands or feet or garage doors showing in the photo, etc.
All edges of the quilt must be visible; do not crop into the edges of the quilt.

From Festival of Quilts:
Art Quilt Masters 2013 is a juried competition that is open to all, with a prize of GBP 5,000. Judged by a panel of leading figures drawn from the art and quilting worlds, the works selected for exhibition will be presented in a distinct gallery within the Festival of Quilts 2013. The aim is to celebrate those quilts that transcend craft and demand equal billing with work shown in an art gallery.
All textile techniques may be employed, from simple quilting or patchwork to fabric printing, embroidery and creative mixed-media. Judges will be looking for a fully-resolved composition and powerful artistic impression. Abstract and figurative pieces are equally welcome.

Butterflies and Their Beautiful Kin
The Texas Quilt Museum invites submission of original quilt art created after 2010 from those residing in the U.S. on the theme of butterflies, including caterpillars, the concept of a chrysalis, and plants attractive to butterflies. Abstract as well as representational designs are welcome. Butterflies and Their Beautiful Kin will be a juried exhibition of contemporary quilt art, with selected quilts touring from September of 2014 through 2017, in secure, insured exhibition spaces. All accepted quilts must be available for the tour and the quilts may not be for sale. The exhibition will premiere at the Texas Quilt Museum in April through June of 2014. The jury committee consists of Karey Bresenhan, Nancy O'Bryant Puentes, and Sandra Sider. To apply, please go to
