Meet Your Representative Maggie Vanderweit
I began sewing in childhood and discovered the joys of quilting in my early twenties. At first it was just for friends and family, but I was so passionate that In 2000 I decided to work full time teaching, lecturing and stitching under the name “Stone Threads Fibre Art”.
My art is displayed and sold in galleries, shops, and textile museums, and in international textile art shows, like Houston, Chicago, Birmingham, England and Johannesburg. Since joining, my quilts has been included in the following SAQA traveling shows: Metaphors on Aging, Wild Fabrications, Balancing Act, Turmoil, My Corner of the World – Canada and My Corner of the World – International.
My new book “Stone Threads”, a retrospective of over 40 years as a maker, was released in June 2016 and my work has been included in many publications. I create original contemporary art with hand-painted and rust and botanical dyed fabrics, silk fusion, felt, hand embroidery, beading, collage and intricately machine quilted surfaces.
I present a variety of lectures, retreats and workshops for guilds, Art Colleges, Elora Art Workshops, quilt stores, the Canadian Quilting Association and the Creativ Festival. I am a Juried Art Member of SAQA, a professional member of CQA and belong to the SDA and Connections Fibre Artists. Recent awards at the CQA National Juried Show include the 2013 Award for Excellence in Innovation, and the 2014 First Prize for Original Design in Non-Representational Wall Quilts. I also won Grand Prize at Threadworks 2106 and the Fibre Award for Insights 2016.
I am inspired to create by the interconnected social, personal, spiritual and natural universes and my reflections on life. I am presently preparing for a one-month artist residency and solo exhibition in Elora, Ontario, January 2017 called Being Here Now.
