Meet Your Representative (NE) Shea Wilkinson

I'm a Nebraska native and have sewn clothes, costumes, quilts, and dolls since childhood. I earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in International Studies and German Language. Afterward, I taught English in Mexico, during which time I became passionate about creating art. When I returned to the United States, I immediately pursued a new career as an artist.

I create art quilts using free motion quilting on a domestic sewing machine, in a sense, drawing with needle and thread. The story that I tell through my work is related to imagery from nature, myths, indigenous tales, and extraterrestrial worlds. I often think about how we understand the cosmos and our relationship to it, and that often finds its way into the themes that I choose. Through my work, I’d like to elicit a sense of magic and wonderment in the viewer, preparing them to delve into the world of nature and myth, where everything is permitted and new worlds spring up instantly.
