Given the opportunity, children often enjoy climbing trees.  Of course, clinging to the tree's trunk is much safer than moving out onto a branch or limb; in fact, the farther the climber moves out away from the trunk, the greater the likelihood that the limb will bend or break and the climber will take a tumble.

While the idiom "out on a limb" is not commonly applied to artists, risk taking is certainly ingredient to an artist's existence.  The risk taking begins with the artist's first response to the creative urge and expands with explorations of media, processes, techniques, and styles.  The risk taking continues with the mining of one's internal and external geographies for inspiration, as well as the vulnerability of sending work out into the world.

This month's mini gallery showcases work that focuses on the subject of trees.  Viewers are invited to use the selections as opportunity to consider how these artists might have gone "out on a limb" in responding to their creative callings, developing their craft, seeking inspiration, and releasing their work into the world.   Look for places of commonality and difference among these artists' approaches and between their approaches and your own.  Use the theme as opportunity to move toward heightened awareness of how your own creative process leads you "out on a limb."
