Susan frames her traditional Japanese sashiko hand-embroidery pieces with Japanese fabric borders -not unlike mounting Japanese hanging scrolls – and turns them into small wall quilts. Using this traditional Japanese stitch, Susan honors the authentic roots of meditative mending while creating a unique contemporary art form. Her work is greatly influenced by the culture and textiles of Japan - having travelled there 34 times since 1970, beginning with a Rotary High School Exchange student and including 30 textile tours under the umbrella of her own business, Quilters’ Express to Japan. Also on view at her exhibit will be 100 miniature cloth amulets that she recently completed at 1 per day across a continuous 100 days.
