Call for Entry Details• Houston, Texas
Deadline: September 3, 2018
Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison invite you to create a piece that expresses your love and appreciation of your mother, sister, influential aunt, friend, or any woman you greatly admire. This unique installation will feature three separate components, each telling a part of the story.
Layer one: The top portion of the installation will be hung at least 16 feet from the floor. It will consist of 36" x 36" quilts with the theme of "Seasons of Life: Garden as a Metaphor."
Layer two: Will be an installation of art cloth: sheers that employ surface design, for example painted, stenciled, and dyed in many different ways, to embody the theme “The Sacred Feminine” in an ethereal form. They move freely from the current in the air above to create a lovely environment. These measure 2’ x 8’ in a vertical format. Suggested fabrics for this entry include Silk Organza, Silk Habotai, Cotton Organdy, and any other fabric which is lightweight and somewhat sheer. The label should be attached to the sleeve. Two layers of sheer may be used, but these must hang from a single display rod. Stitching on Layer two entries is not required, and is optional, based on the integrity of the design.
Layer Three: This will feature “life-size” quilted portraits of women. “The Women’s Circle: Strength and Inspiration” will depict the woman who taught you how to sew, a favorite teacher, a woman who loved you unconditionally, someone who encouraged you to make art, who taught you how to cook, the one who is your friend. You know these women as they tug at your heart and raise you up. If you are a woman artist, you can create a life-size of yourself. Each quilt in this portion of the installation is 2’ x 6’ in vertical format.
This exhibit will premiere at Quilt Market and Festival November 2018. We would also like to retain quilts for a possible exhibit at International Quilt Festivals in 2019. Note: the size requirements and themes are different in each of the layers.
There is no limit on the number of pieces you may enter. Each application will allow you to enter 3 pieces. If you have more, just start a new application.
Any technique may be used as long as it is appropriate for the layer and the theme. Artworks need to be made specifically for this exhibit.
The entry may be traditional, art, or modern as long as they address the theme. Any materials may be used. However, the final result must be flexible in nature and be hung from a sleeve.
Length of exhibit: Quilts will be returned by the end of January 2019 if quilt does not travel to other venues, or arrangements may be made to have a quilt picked up at the conclusion of the show. If you agree to allow your quilt to travel, your quilt will be returned by the end of September 2019.
Selling Your Quilt: You may choose to offer your quilt for sale while on exhibition. If you do, 12.5% of the selling price will be donated to the International Quilt Association (IQA) and 12.5% of the selling price will be donated to the Texas Quilt Museum. Both the Association and the Museum are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Please check with your tax attorney for information on how to deduct the donation.
