SAQA EXHIBITION / EVENT
• Tampa, Florida
March 16, 2018 - March 17, 2018
You’ve probably seen Pat Pauly on Quilting Arts TV. She’s known for her bold and graphic quilts and for her no rules approach to design and construction. You’ll often find her slashing and reassembling pieces, as well as working from a broad range of design inspirations. Her workshops focus on design and technique, as well as when to apply the rules, and when to toss them out.
A sought-after lecturer and teacher in contemporary fiber arts, Pat Pauly shares her wealth of knowledge from decades of working in design. A former exhibition designer and art graduate, her strong contemporary fiber work has been featured in numerous publications, seen in exhibitions internationally, and is in private and corporate collections. Pat Pauly is a frequent lecturer on the relationship of traditional quilts to contemporary works, conducts workshops on contemporary art quilt design, and curates exhibitions of fiber art. Pat Pauly’s studio is in Rochester, New York.

A Dozen Ways: Design Ideas for Art Quilts
Often, we are encouraged to “be creative” and just design. Well, designing “from thin air” is extremely difficult! Most artists return to an image file, whether an actual one, or one in their memory for designing.
This two day workshop reveals tips, ideas and techniques that are useful for starting from scratch for original art quilts. From small studies, to full scale patterns, Pat Pauly uses various ways to design and construct art quilts. In this workshop she will share her methods for starting from nothing, where there is no pattern to use. We’ll use examples of works that show strong design, and use critical language to breakdown compositional elements. Bring your notebooks, try some design exercises, and take away more than a baker’s dozen of ideas for kick starting your own original work.
