I make contemporary quilts because of the women who have been making quilts for hundreds of years. Their collective knowledge enables me to move forward and take risks because I don't need to re-learn all that they have discovered. However, so many of those women are unknown, reflecting the status of women in history in general.

I chose to make a contemporary copy of a very traditional, well worn functional quilt and use fabric transparency to comment on that invisibility of women in history and craft, whilst paying a personal homage to all the quilt makers whose work and experience allows me to make non-functional art work.
