Transformations 07 - Reverberations

May 31, 2007- Transformations 2007: Reverberations, a Studio Art Quilt Associations, Inc. exhibition, is a breathtaking exhibit of 24 quilt artists. The artists are Bettina Andersen, Ludmila Aristova, Liz Axford, Jette Clover, Linda Colsh, Dena Crain, Jamie Fingal, Marilyn Gillis, Rayna Gillman, Deborah Gregory, Rosemary Hoffenberg, Pat Kroth, Jeanne Lounsbury, Eileen Lauterborn, Carol Lenthall, Denise Linet, Eleanor McCain, Dan Olfe, Katie Pasquini Masopust, Jeri Riggs, Susan Shie, Carol Taylor, Kathy Weave, and Anita Welty. The exhibit will travel to Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, England (August 16-19, 2007), Quilt Indulgence Festival in New South Wales, Australia (September 14-17, 2007), Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey, Michigan (January 12-March 8, 2008), Visions Gallery in Oceanside, California (April 4-May 25, 2008) and Cornell Museum in Delray, Florida (June 30-September 1, 2008).

Sandra Sider, juror, said this about her experience, "My goal in jurying this exhibition was to select a group of quilts in which ideas or emotions were successfully expressed through color, line, and texture. I looked for quilts in which artists had grappled with concept or emotion, creating surfaces that enabled viewers to respond to the thought behind the art." "My subtitle for the exhibition, “Reverberations,” resulted from the visual dialogues between the various quilts, which became evident during the jurying process. Through shape, color, texture, or idea, these works speak to each other in the archetypical language of quilts."

Sider said about the quilts in the exhibit, "Liz Axford's felted “Alchemy” with its stately, golden squares balances the taut, rhythmic motion of squares in Eleanor McCain's “Color Grid Study 2.” In “Pyramid Reflections #5,” Dan Olfe used many-hued triangular overlays to build an intricate geometric surface, while Eileen Lauterborn, in “Unknown Territory,” let color run rampant in linear exuberance. Death is embraced lovingly in Susan Shie's ode to the compost pile (“Compost Pot/Death”), and Pat Kroth's “Midnight Jambalaya” ebulliently recycles the flotsam of daily life."
