SAQA New Mexico Region Participates in Albuquerque ARTScrawl

Is your SAQA region thinking about how to engage with your local community? How about participating in a First Friday event? That’s what the SAQA New Mexico Region did!

In 2005, Albuquerque Arts Business Association introduced First Friday ARTScrawl, a citywide gallery tour. This event features exhibit openings, receptions, demonstrations, and special events. The New Mexico region participated in August 2018.

SAQA members work was displayed at Hipstitch, a premiere sewing lounge and fabric boutique located in the Heights area of the city. Owners Susan Kelly and Steve Hamlin actively support the fiber arts community in Albuquerque. The New Mexico SAQA region also holds their monthly meetings at Hipstitch. Kelly had this to say about the event, “I loved having the exhibition and was so inspired I personally joined SAQA.”

The exhibition was called Art Quilts Tell Fiber Art ‘Stories’. The show featured art quilts that were created by members of the New Mexico SAQA region, and included selections from their recent regional show, Life Along the Rio Grande.

In addition to the display of members work, SAQA JAM member Betty Busby led participants in a mini transfer printing workshop. Pro Chem donated Transperse Dyes for the event.
